NOTES ON PERFORMANCE: May 14th is the official reintroduction of me to my NYC Society, presented by Urban Stages and Frances as my Producer/Mentor/Old Family Friend… But, secretly, technically, last Monday was the first time I actually stepped back on the NYC stage…
…if you happened to catch me the other night, at that impromptu “Cast Party” Open Mic night moment at Birdland Jazz & Cabaret Club in NYC, you would know, I was wary of signing up since I don’t do open mics anymore, or so I thought…
I was working out ways in my mind to back out, trying to think… as I ate my lovely salmon roasted beat salad (Thank you Frances!), I’m thinking that will be singing for my supper soon no matter what and I better just jump whether I’m polished or not… and also, Frances is my old trusted family friend and my newest Mentor, so I have to do what she says no matter what…
By 9:45pm or so, I let her push me out there, out of the nest, last Monday eve, and besides… she said, basically, “I’m not moving from this chair till you get up there and sing…”
I didn’t flop but I was pretty rusty on the guitar, forgetting how to own the moment, to hug the mic and lead my audience like I usually do, but… you could tell they wanted to go with me anyway, though, which means, the song definitely has legs - when a song can carry itself despite it’s singer, then you know it will fly for real someday. I sang “woW!” -wearing road trip clothes and my untamable mane, loose curls, dark tight enough jeans and the old army shirt Louise sewed buttons on for me when I decided to “go find my team” I told her. I’ve got black flats on,.. I just rolled out of the Cruz with a guitar case that won’t shut anymore, catching up on sleep in an outdoor parking lot (the lot attendant is nice like that)
I know I’m slowly emerging, stronger than ever this time.
Next day: Tuesday morning, Frances and I decided I need to start rehearsing a lot again now. We called Sue and she and Frances start rehearsals with me via zoom this weekend. Thank God for Frances Hill Barlow!!! and for Sue Matsuki!
More soon…
